Top 10 Favorite Things About Halloween

I may have mentioned this before, but Halloween is a bit of a big deal in the Tobin household. We’re big fans of all things scary, spooky, ghoulish, and ghostly, so October tends to be one of the most fun months of the year.

With that in mind, Jason decided to try out a countdown vid on the channel (guest appearances from my disembodied voice!) listing off his 10 favorite things about the Halloween season. Check it out and let us know in the comment section what your favorite things about Halloween are!

Plans and Goals 2018: Week 41 Review

Oh, my dear friends and followers… Week 40 was such a good week, such a morale-boosting week.

Week 41 was not.

I’m going to do my best not to turn this into a mopey post, because the truth is that I feel much better and more energized now that the week has turned around again, but you definitely shouldn’t be expecting any majorly uplifting moments. With that said, let’s get through this thing as fast as we can.

Plan #1: Focus more on Writing.
It was one of those “Oh yeah, I’m going to do AMAZING!” weeks, until around about…Wednesday. Yep. I had two whole days of being good before it all fell apart.

  • Goal #1: Write half a million words throughout the year. I got very little writing done in week 41, which is pretty disappointing after how great week 40 was, but I’m giving myself a bit of a pass for emotional reasons. That said, I did managed to write 1436 words worth of blog posts and posts for, as well as 989 fiction words, which were scene rewrites for The Other World: Book Two. That gives me a paltry 2425 words for the week, but hey…at least it’s something! Those few words bring my year’s total up to 205,112 words, and knocks my daily average down slightly to 715. All in all, I’m just really happy that my daily average didn’t duck down below 700 again.
  • Goal #2: Sell more books. There’s not much to report here. I did sell a couple of books recently (and I literally mean a couple). What’s more important is that I started looking more into publishers and agents. That whole rabbit hole is the kind of thing that will literally devour your soul, but it’s also an important step forward if I ever want to be traditionally published, so I consider it a necessary evil.
  • Goal #3: Complete and publish The Other World: Book Two. I already mentioned this above, but I did a couple of scene rewrites recently, as well as starting the final read-through before I toss the manuscript at my beta-readers. This honestly should have been done by Friday or Saturday, but again…emotional stuff. Anyway, the important thing is that I’m a few dedicated hours of reading and making minor fixes away from being done with this manuscript for a while.

Plan #2: Focus more on YouTube.
I don’t want to talk about it.

  • Goal #1: Film more often. Okay, I guess I have to talk about it. Jason and I fell apart a bit last week when it came to filming. By the end of the week we had managed to do one unboxing video and I helped Jason record a new style of video for Halloween, but we also spent a lot of time steadfastly not filming. A lot of excuses were made, a lot of cold, dark days were spent hiding under blankets, and that’s all there is to that.
  • Goal #2: Put more focus into, and have more fun with, the social media aspect. Social stuff continues to move forward pretty well. I had a day or so during which I just couldn’t face anyone, even digitally, but aside from that one road-bump it was a perfectly good week. We always share a lot of stuff on Instagram and Twitter during the Halloween season, and people seem to be enjoying that as always, so that’s been fun.

#3: Focus more on myself.
Is admitting that I’m an emotional wreck “focus”? Okay, that might be a little dramatic, but I am in a very stressful place lately, so take that as you will.

  • Goal #1: Take time daily to read/watch/play. I’d love to say that I used my grumpy, too-stressed-out moments to get some reading done, but that didn’t really happen, aside from reading Goosebumps with the little one. I have still been playing Dead Nation on “Morbid” mode, and I managed to get past that one stage that was beating the hell out of me, so yay for that. But I also spent way too much time playing Sailor Drops the past week. Some people get addicted to alcohol or cigarettes or gambling…I get addicted to dumb puzzle games. Yeah, it’s a huge waste of time, but at least my dumb addiction doesn’t extend to wasting money. The day I actually start spending money on extra lives, feel free to punch me in the nose.
  • Goal #2: Stay active, but don’t obsess. Is Marie reading? Hi Marie! I totally intended to do those Halloween Zombies Run missions on the weekend! No, seriously, I swear! So why didn’t I? Uh…uh…*runs away*

So, looking back, my week was filled with…social media and mobile games. Oh yeah, I’m a production master. Don’t worry though. I’m thoroughly disgusted with myself and plan to rectify things in the coming week. Just you watch. I’m going to be productive AF. *runs away again*

Plans and Goals 2018: Week 40 Review

The weather is getting chillier, aches and pains are popping up to remind me that I’m not a particularly young woman anymore, and I’m having negative luck tracking down a job. That’s all the bad news. The good news is that week 40 was actually a pretty productive one, and I’m more-or-less in a good mood as a result of that!

Plan #1: Focus more on Writing.
My focus was on point this past week! Alright, maybe “focus” is actually kind of a bad word for it, but “determination” works pretty well, I think!

  • Goal #1: Write half a million words throughout the year. I broke my record again! And by a significant amount! I wrote my ass off this week, racking up a total of 7476 words toward blog posts and posts for, and a total of  8368 fiction words! Either of those numbers alone is a pretty nice week for me, but together they give me a week’s total of 15,844! That kicks ass, if I do say so myself! It also brings the year’s total up to 202,687 (finally I hit a number 100k mark!) and gives my daily average a nice boost up to 724 (finally I’m up above 700 again!). All in all, the long and short of it is that I’m extremely proud of this particular week. I really hope I’m able to keep that momentum up with the weeks I have left in the year!
  • Goal #2: Sell more books. I won’t go and claim that I’ve had an outstanding sales week or anything like that, but comparatively speaking, based on prior weeks, it was definitely better than usual. I sold a handful of paperbacks, a couple of e-books, and racked up a few page reads on Kindle Unlimited. We’re talking less than $20 in royalties, but again, comparatively? It was a good week. let’s hope it keeps up.
  • Goal #3: Complete and publish The Other World: Book Two. I’m getting soooooo close! I definitely think there are going to be some major fixes coming my way once my beta-readers get their hands on this one, but in terms of actually getting it into their hands in the first place, I’m extremely close. I’m basically just working out the last couple of scenes of the ending, which is something I tend to struggle with. There’s very little left to go though, so with any luck I’ll be reporting that my beta-readers are digging into it by this time next week.

Plan #2: Focus more on YouTube.
First off, we did intend to go crazy with videos for the month of October, mostly with horror and Halloween-related stuff, but that turned out to require both more time and more effort than we have available. Still, week 40 was a decent week for YouTube!

  • Goal #1: Film more often. We managed to film, edit, and upload four videos in week 40. When you work in all the other stuff like job-hunting, taking Adrianna to and from school and tae kwon do, doing all the errands, and so on, that’s actually quite the accomplishment. We probably could have squeezed more in, but there were other, more important things that needed to be tended to as well, so I’m quite satisfied with what we did manage.
  • Goal #2: Put more focus into, and have more fun with, the social media aspect. I’ve been having a lot of fun with the Instagram accounts in particular so far in October. I took on two photo challenges, one for the channel account that I actually designed myself and am using toys and collectibles to complete, and one for the author account that is all to do with books. Both have been a lot of fun, and although not all of my pictures have been great, I’ve snapped a few that I’m genuinely proud of. Twittering comes along with that, and I’ve been having fun chatting with people about Halloween and horror stuff, so that’s been great. Facebook continues to be awful. Meh, what can you do?

#3: Focus more on myself.
Phew! Okay, it’s actually been a pretty great post so far, but I have to share a confession here: my “me time” has been overwhelmingly all about work recently.

  • Goal #1: Take time daily to read/watch/play. Despite putting together a great little pile of books for my TBR, I’ve done very little reading in this first week of October. I read the first chapter of Frankenstein before deciding to switch over to my book of Edgar Allen Poe stories because I wanted something that could be more easily consumed. Even then I only read the first story in the book so far.
Watching? Well, I’ve been watching horror movies with Jason every night because we do this every October. It’s a tradition! So there is that, I guess, but it’s not “me time”; it’s “us time”.
Playing? I keep picking up Dead Nation whenever I have a few minutes, but it’s been frustrating me more than anything. I’m trying to beat the game on Morbid mode (which is one step down from the one-hit-kill mode), and I’ve been stuck on the second-to-last stage all week. RAWR.
  • Goal #2: Stay active, but don’t obsess. I’ll be straight with you here: I’m probably not going to get much activity in now for the rest of the year. October is a busy month for us, moreso this year since we’re job-hunting. November is National Novel Writing Month, and also when I start getting ready for Adrianna’s birthday in early December. And then it’s December. You can probably guess why that’s a busy month.
So yeah, basically, I’m going to be pretty busy. I’ll try to grab my thigh master every now and then, but it’s going to be a rough go, to be honest.

So that was week 40. We’re getting closer and closer to the end of 2018, and I’m finally starting to get significantly productive. Better late than never right? Ha!

How was your week? Were you able to accomplish anything? Do anything fun? Make any progress toward your own goals? Feel free to share!
