Plans & Goals 2020: Week 37 Review

Happy Monday everyone! If you aren’t a Monday person, please excuse my enthusiasm, as I am attempting to be cheerier in general. Also, wish me luck. It’s not always an easy thing to accomplish. 😛

On this surprisingly lovely Monday morning I have a few things to mention. Firstly and foremost, the first week back to school for the little miss went fairly well. It’s definitely going to be a strange year, and there were quite a few kinks to work through on that first day when they had the kids lined up for half a mile while waiting to get in the school, but things seem to have gotten a little calmer since then. The biggest frustration, I expect, will be from kids who have trouble being still for too long, because the new rules have kids remaining in their classroom for all classes except gym, as well as lunch. My daughter doesn’t seem to be having any issue, as she’s not a fidgety kind of kid, but I can only imagine how some of the other kids are doing. Fingers crossed for no one to lose their minds.

On a related note, our local university starts back up today, and restrictions seem to be going well there, aside from four out-of-province students who failed to self-isolate when they arrived and subsequently got fined $1000 each. Congratulations, dumbasses. Whether you agree with self-isolation or not, the fact of the matter is that those are the rules in Nova Scotia, and you just cost yourself an entire course price-tag before classes even started. I hope whatever party you snuck out to was worth it.

In other randomness, sometime within the next few days I should be receiving my new phone in the mail. Jason and I were both eligible for an upgrade, and unlike several times in the past the current required contract plans were actually better than what we already had, so there was absolutely no reason not to go ahead and upgrade. We’re both getting a Samsung S20+, and I’m extremely giddy for a new toy. lol Our old phones were still decent ones, but being several generations old now they were starting to get very slow, die very fast, and overheat when running too many programs, so it will be exciting to have a shiny new phone that runs like a top for a while. I’m sure that’s neither here nor there to you guys, but I wanted to mention it because it makes me smile. 🙂

Okay, let’s get into the goal stuff, I suppose!

Goal #1: Be Healthier

Phew…I’m not going to lie; last week was basically a complete system shutdown as far as this goal goes.

  • Eat better (and less) – In a general kind of sense, I ate well throughout the week…but in a more narrowed down, specific-times-of-day sense… Yeah, okay, so we had a lot of snacks last week. A lot of sitting down and gorging on bad-for-you crap like popcorn and cookies and nachos and- Bah, you get the idea. The point is that I fell off the wagon something fierce when it comes to being careful about what I put in my body. But I am newly motivated to do better! Over the weekend we picked up a fridge that my parents were getting rid of (because they re-did their kitchen), and it’s nicer than our old one, and nice and clean and shiny, and somehow that gives me motivation to fill it full of good foods. Fingers crossed that the motivation lasts. lol
    .
  • Drink more water – Part of the reason that I think I went a little foolish with the snacks last week is that I’ve been slowly waning more and more on how much water I’m consuming in a day. I’m not sure exactly what happened – I guess I just stopped paying attention – but I would definitely say that my consumption last week was down considerably from where it has been in recent weeks. This is something else that I have newfound motivation to fix, especially considering that the new fridge has a (working) ice-maker, so I can have nice cold water all the time. ❤
    .
  • Get more exercise – Oh MAN, did exercise just…go by the way side last week. I believe I did some strength training last Monday, and that was pretty much it. We didn’t even do much in the way of walking around to play Pokemon Go, because we all had special research that required doing raids, so we mostly drove around searching for raids rather than walk half an hour toward a gym only to find that nothing was going on there. It’s a shitty excuse, I know, I’m just saying that’s what happened.

Long story short, I got wicked bloody lazy last week, and I’m (yes, I’m saying it again) NEWLY MOTIVATED to fix this nonsense. To be more specific, I decided to start doing ‘Zombies, Run!’ again. I’ll probably still sneak in strength training a few times a week because muscle burns fat, but in a general sense I want to do more cardio so I can burn calories, train my heart and lungs, and have fun all at once. ❤
    .
  • Lose 2 lbs per month – Surprisingly enough, considering all the junk-eating and not-exercising, I did not gain weight last week, thank fuck. That said, I didn’t lose either. This morning I was sitting at 172.8, which is basically right where I was last week. I’m definitely not going to complain though, obviously. I’m just bloody delighted that I didn’t gain anything.
    .

Goal #2: Be an Author

Productivity highs and lows concerning author stuff this week. The writing itself? Fan-fucking-tastic. Everything else? Eeeehhh….

  • Write 500,000 words throughout the year – I mentioned last week that my Pacemaker.press account had given me a very easy week to deal with, and deal with I certainly did. I was set to write 4979 words, and absolutely destroyed that with a total of 11,260 words for the week. Some of those words even worked toward ‘Book Three’, which my beta-readers have all been poking me relentlessly for. I’m working on it, you guys, I swear!
    .
  • Promote published books – Hey, I actually kinda did this last week! Just a little, but I managed to sell two of the physical copies that I have piled up and taking up room in my reading/writing room. So that’s nice. I definitely need to put more effort into this one though.
    .
  • Promote Patreon & exclusive content – Nothing went up on the Patreon last week, but that was mostly due to timing, since I put up ‘Revenge Omens’ chapters at roughly ten-day intervals, and the last one went up on a Sunday. That said, I’m currently working on Chapter 11 and it should be up in the next couple of days. Additionally, I’m soon going to start transcribing some of the other stories I’ve been picking at here and there, with the intention being that I’ll have multiple chapters typed up and scheduled so that there will be new posts every week for so many weeks in a row. At least, that’s the plan! Wish me luck accomplishing it!
    .
  • Work on Author social media – Whoooooo-boy. Okay, uh…no sense in mincing words: I basically just gave up on social media in general for a good five or so days in a row there. I’m not even entirely sure why I did so…I just kinda…walked away from the internet for the most part. *cough cough*

On a positive note though, I’m hoping that getting my new phone will help encourage me to spend some more time working on the social accounts. That said, as far as this week goes, the author Instagram gained one follower and the Twitter account remained the same.
    .

Goal #3: Be a YouTuber

No ‘highs and lows’ to speak of here; just good old fashioned ‘fuck all’.

  • Film/edit/upload – Yeah, we just…yeah… We kept telling ourselves (and each other) all week that filming was going to happen, and then it…didn’t. A few times it was because of actual other shit that needed doing, but many of those times it was good old fashioned epic failure.

In our defence though, if we had filmed last week the videos would almost definitely be difficult to watch because of constant cuts so that Jason could sneeze and short or so that I could wipe away the copious amount of sweat I was dealing with. I don’t know what was up with us last week, but the weather and/or flora and/or hormones had as all fucked up. Jason had several days in a row of sinus issues, and I couldn’t move two feet without sweating like I’d run a marathon.

So, uh. Yeah. Take that as an excuse if you want. lol
    .
  • Promote and Interact (Social Media) – As mentioned above, social media just went right down the toilet last week for whatever bloody reason. As a result the Twitter account lost two followers and the Instagram account stayed the same. I must admit, I’m getting really sick of looking at the numbers for those two accounts, because the graph of them would be like a sine wave. A little up, a little down, and back around again. I feel like if I look at the numbers from the beginning of the year I’ll see that I gained effectively nothing. And I won’t lie, that is outrageously frustrating. Let’s work on trying to fix that, hmm? Yeah. Okay.
    .
  • Expand website content – *hands over ears* La la la la la la la I can’t hear you la la la la la la la la-
    .

Goal #4: Be Fun!

I mean, I’m fun all the time, right? Right. Glad we’ve got that settled.

  • Read 50 books throughout the year – Aside from a few short fics that I picked up here and there, I can’t report having read any books this week. (I know, big shocker, right?) At the moment I am focused on the ARC that I mentioned previously so that I’ll be able to get my review up in the requested time-frame. Don’t worry, I’ve always been the type to work best on a rapidly-approaching deadline. lol

With that said, I’ve recently been working on scanning all my books (and manga and comics) into a tracker (because we keep ending up with multiple copies of things like ‘Goosebumps’ books whenever we go to secondhand sales) and looking through everything has been giving me a real desire to actually, you know…read things. *cough cough* So maybe I’ll actually get some progress going soon?
    .
  • Play video games – Funny enough, Jason just told me this morning that he’s not buying me any games for Christmas this year because I never play them. ^_^; So, yeah, that pretty much explains the situation, right?
    .
  • Watch shows/movies – Here’s an admission: Jason and I had never watched a single full episode of ‘Community’ until recently. But we’ve rectified that now! We recently started watching it as our dinner-time show, and are quite enjoying it so far. It’s one of those shows that we had always intended to watch, but just never got around to, so it’s nice to finally get around to it.
In other shows, we just watched the most recent episode of ‘The Boys’ and it continues to be fan-fucking tastic. If you haven’t checked out the show yet, I highly recommend it (just don’t watch with your kids nearby).

In movies, we haven’t been watching too much because Jason’s been spending the later parts of the evenings playing a new game, but we did just recently re-watch ‘The Babysitter’ so that we could also watch ‘The Babysitter 2: Killer Queen’. The sequel was fun, but they pushed a little bit too much of the really goofy stuff for my tastes. The first was more grounded in the realm of possibility, while the sequel had some really foolish scenes that tried to be fun but just pushed a bit too far past any semblance of reality. Still fun though.

And here we are, once again at the end. In the time it took me to write this post Jason’s phone showed up, mine didn’t, and I’ve been online with a support rep for fifteen minutes now trying to work out why my tracking info just says ‘no shipment found’. Wish me luck, my friends, because I was in a decent mood when this post began and now I’m clenching my teeth pretty damn hard.

How was your week? Any accomplishments you want to share? Goals you worked hard on? Feel free to share in the comments!

Plans & Goals 2020: Week 36 Review

The first thing that I feel I should address this week is the fact that, for all intents and purposes, summer has come to an end. Sure, we’re still getting lovely weather in Nova Scotia right now, and the season hasn’t officially changed over yet, but with school starting up tomorrow and things attempting to return to some semblance of normalcy in the coming weeks, it certainly feels like summer is over. It’s a bit bittersweet, honestly. I’m sure we all feel a bit as though summer has lasted forever this year, given the effective shut-down of the planet, but there’s still something that is a strange mixture of sadness and excitement when this season is over.

It also makes me feel as though it’s time to buck up and act like an adult again, and that is just an annoying feeling, isn’t it? 😛

Another thing that I’ll address is the fact that Nova Scotia is still doing well concerning Covid, with only one new case reported over the past five days, but we definitely need to remain vigilant. Our kids are going to be returning to school starting tomorrow, and that is a disaster waiting to happen right there. Don’t get me wrong; I’m personally glad that school is back in session. But we have to be careful if we’re going to avoid a second wave that’s more akin to a tsunami. My daughter, in particular, has already expressed the desire to wear her mask all day every day while at school. That could definitely change once she gets a taste of what it’s like to have a covering on your face for six straight hours a day, but I appreciate her attitude toward keeping herself safe.

My main concern right now is for the children grades 3 and under, who are not being made to require masks in their classrooms. While I understand the reasoning behind not imposing masks on children who are young enough to almost definitely have constant temper tantrums concerning them, I’m also reasonable enough to understand that these are going to be the kids with the greatest likelihood of catching and transmitting the bug. Children of that age are all over each other at all times, do not listen to direction well, and are snotty, sneezing, hacking balls of germs who don’t have a single concern for keeping themselves clean. So to think that a bunch of kids that age in a room together are going to somehow be kept apart enough to avoid transmission…that’s just not going to happen. And once it’s in the school…well…all we can really do is sit back and wait to see what happens, I suppose.

Finally, before I get into the actual goals, I’m going to go ahead right now and say that last week was a bit of a write-off because of last-minute summer shenanigans. At the very beginning of the week we went off for a three day retreat to a cabin in the middle of nowhere with a bunch of Jason’s family, and at the end of the week we spent two days down in our hometown to celebrate one of the little ones’ birthdays and to have one last washer toss family tournament before the summer was up. So, all told, that’s five days during which I didn’t get much of anything done. And that’s fine, because, come on…you’ve gotta have your relaxation and family stuff too, and both events were a great time. Just, keep that in mind as I move on to the goals and explain how everything kinda went to shit last week. lol

Goal #1: Be Healthier

I mean, in a way, I was very healthy last week because I spent a ton of time outdoors, breathing fresh air, conversing with nature (aka the squirrels and chipmunks who kept coming to us looking for food), enjoying family stuff, and so on.

In another, more literal way, I was unhealthy as hell all week.

  • Eat better (and less) – You can hardly blame me for failing to eat well while away on vacation and/or celebrating a birthday, right? Right.

I tried, at first, I’ll tell you that much. But while we were at the cabin there were hotdogs, hamburgers, chips, popcorn, muffins, scones, bacon, eggs, toast, gummy candy, cheese, pepperoni, crackers, and we also went out for fish and chips on one day. Then there’s the birthday party, at which there was pizza, cookies, candies, and a cake so rich I actually had a hard time finishing my slice (but I did, make no mistake). Then there was the grown-up party after the kid’s party, which involved several varieties of chips and dips, hot wings, and a rather large quantity of alcohol.

So, long story short…there were a lot of calories had last week, and I’ve got a lot to make up for this week.
    .
  • Drink more water – On the plus side, water was certainly not a problem! Especially after that massive hangover I mentioned to you guys a couple of weeks ago…I’ve been very careful to make sure I’m plowing lots of water into myself these days. Plus a couple of health powders that I mix into water in order to get extra vitamins and energy boosts and the like. Basically, I’m more than good when it comes to water.
    .
  • Get more exercise – Back on the original hand, exercise was more-or-less non-existent last week. There was a bit of Pokemon walking, and what little physical exertion occurs while playing washer toss (which isn’t much), but that pretty much covers that. There were no exercise videos because, frankly, I barely spent any of last week at home. Now that we’re back into the school year, though, there should be little to no travelling happening anymore, so hopefully I’ll get back into the whole exercise schtick again. 😛
    .
  • Lose 2 lbs per month – Now, seriously, you can’t possibly be expecting any good news here after reading the above paragraphs, can you? For the sake of making a report, I’ll tell you that I was 173 lbs this morning, which is up one pound from last week’s report. And honestly? I’m not overly displeased with that, because if I only gained one pound after all the eating and drinking I did last week, that’s pretty bloody decent.
    .

Goal #2: Be an Author

You might guess that author-related activities were a little slow last week, and you would be right…but it actually isn’t as bad as you might be imagining. I definitely had quite a slow-down, but all in all it still turned out to be a totally salvageable collection of days.

  • Write 500,000 words throughout the year – Firstly, I managed to get the majority of my writing done in the two days during which I was neither at the cabin, nor back home for the party. How I pulled that off I honestly don’t know, but I’m more than satisfied with myself. I didn’t actually hit the goal that Pacemaker.press asked me for (8070 words), but I came pretty damn close with a totally acceptable 7709 words.

On a related note, Pacemaker has let me off super-easy this current week with a goal of only 4979 words, so I’m excited to see how thoroughly I can destroy that number now that I’ve got no events to distract me.
    .
  • Promote published books – I’m not going to lie and say that I did much on this front, but I did do a bit of promotion via both Instagram accounts last week. Unfortunately, as usual, it doesn’t seem to have really accomplished anything, so….as always, I welcome thoughts and suggestions. Help me sell some bloody books, plsthnx?
    .
  • Promote Patreon & exclusive content – I seem to have worked myself into a decent kinda-schedule concerning the Patreon account. Last week I posted another chapter of “Revenge Omens”, as well as a second part to my prior “Good Omens” Lockdown fic. Both will go up on AO3 ten days after they were posted on Patreon, and hopefully before that happens I’ll have another chapter of “Revenge Omens” prepared.
    .
  • Work on Author social media – Understandably, social media was a little slow last week because of all the family stuff. I did still manage to do a fair little bit, and the Instagram gained nine new followers, but the Twitter stagnated, neither gaining nor losing.
    .

Goal #3: Be a YouTuber

You might also guess that YouTube-related activities were slow last week because of all the family stuff going on…and this time you would be totally correct.

  • Film/edit/upload – Yeah, just…just all kinda of no. Honestly there were a few videos that we easily could have gotten filmed, but come on guys…we were only actually home for two days last week.

That said, we did technically film something! On the way back from our vacation to the cabin, we all decided to pop over to Halifax, and while there Jason and I realized that Spirit Halloween was open. Thus, we took the opportunity to head in and film our yearly hunt video. Unfortunately the Covid situation meant that we had to wear our masks in the store (thus muffling our voices), and that we couldn’t try on any costumes or anything, but there was still lots of fun stuff to check out, and we had both Adrianna and her cousin with us this year so I got some cute pictures of the two of them.

    Hey, it’s something!
    .
  • Promote and Interact (Social Media) – Similarly to the author accounts, the YouTube social media was slow last week. I managed a bit, but it was slow and the numbers reflect that. The Twitter account gained two followers, and the Instagram account lost four.
    .
  • Expand website content – Fuck me, I really should just remove this one from the list. I mentioned last week that I’d come up with a bunch of ideas for articles for the site, but, yeaaaaah, none of them ever actually got written. But come on, you guys…you already know how taken-up my week already was. Just give me a break on this one, okay? (She said, knowing full well that this is the 36th break in a row.)
    .

Goal #4: Be Fun!

There was plenty of fun had last week, that’s for damn sure. That said, it wasn’t really the kind of fun that is applied to these particular goals, sooo… Yeah, you know where this is going.

  • Read 50 books throughout the year – I didn’t get anything completely read last week, but I did start on that ARC I mentioned last week. I decided to just set “Godsgrave” aside for now in order to get through the ARC because I have a deadline for the review of it coming up later this month. That said, so far I’m really enjoying it. It takes place in Newfoundland, which shares a lot of dialect quirks with Nova Scotia, so seeing some of that stuff pop up in prose is highly amusing to me. Plus, the opening scene with the descriptions of the storm and the tidal wave and so on…just very well-written. Obviously I’ll have the full review up on here sometime later, but for the time being, trust me when I say that it’s quite pleasing so far.
    .
  • Play video games – Video games were RIGHT OUT last week. Unless you count Pokemon Go, of which there was still a decent amount. And speaking of which, I recently found out that sis-in-law and cousin-in-law’s sister (fem-cousin-in-law?) both play as well, so now we’ve got a group of six whenever we’re all in town together and want to destroy a raid. For those of you who don’t play Pokemon Go, that probably sounded weird AF, and you should just go ahead and ignore me. The point is, there were no video games last week.
    .
  • Watch shows/movies – Aaaaand there wasn’t a whole lot of watching stuff either! All that time spent with family was done so away from televisions, so there were only a few nights during which we even could watch things. That said, we did watch the first few episodes of season two of “The Boys”, which is shaping up to be just as enjoyable (and grotesquely violent) as the first season. Other than that the only thing I really recall us watching last week was the “Child’s Play” remake, which Jason and Adrianna had already seen but deigned to watch again so I could see it. FYI, it definitely is not the original, but I personally thought that it was a fun, interesting idea for a remake. And Mark Hamill is the god of creepy voice acting, long may he reign over us all.

All in all…I mean, come on you guys, it was basically the last week of summer! I enjoyed myself, got a bit of excellent relaxation time in (hubby and I got to hang in a hot tub!), and still managed to get a bit done here and there. I’m calling that a heck of a win, and I refuse to broach any arguments on the subject. 😛

“Revenge Omens” – Chapter Ten: From All the Forces of Heaven and Hell

Phew! We’re up to double-digit chapters now! I must admit, when I first started writing this fic, I wasn’t expecting it to be a particularly long one, but it seems to have grown and become a THING and now I know that I have to bring it to some kind of satisfying conclusion, and that’s what we’re slowly heading toward, starting with this particular chapter. The question is, what kind of conclusion will it be?

I’m genuinely curious: what are you expecting from the outcome of ‘Revenge Omens’? Are you expecting to be stabbed in the heart right up until the end? Are you thinking of more of a bittersweet finale? Or are you still holding out that somehow, someway, things are going to turn out alright, that it will miraculously work its way into a happy ending? Let me know in the comments so I can get a feel for what my lovely readers are thinking!

In the meantime though, enjoy Chapter Ten, in which Phanuel arrives with an ultimatum and Aziraphale defends himself in a less-than-civil manner.

Enjoy, my loves!
