Welcome to February, everyone! It’s the month of Love! And, also, apparently “Women in Horror Month”, which is a thing that I did not know existed but am now rather enamoured with.
Anyway, the first month of the year has passed, and with it the weeks that are generally the worst of the winter (at least, in my opinion). We’re now into the turnaround month, when the sun starts to come out a little more, the days start to get longer again, and there’s hope on the horizon for Spring. Oh yeah, sure, we’ve still got quite a bit of winter to go – especially if you live somewhere like Eastern Canada – but there’s an endpoint in view, and that can mean all the difference. Ya girl suffers from S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder), after all, so any signs of possibility of winter coming to an end is kind of a big deal.
There are also possible signs of other good things on the horizon as well, but I’m keeping my lips zipped for now because I don’t want to jinx anything or count my chickens or any of that nonsense.
So for now, let’s just focus on the post, shall we?
Look, I’m still working into a groove, alright? So cut me a bit of slack, okay?!
In all seriousness, things aren’t going badly; I just wanted to be silly because things aren’t going amazingly or anything like that.
Looking first at the exercise side of things, I think I’m doing half-decently considering the fact that it’s cold and dark and depressing at the moment, which makes it really hard to convince myself to do anything beyond curling up in couch blankets to sulk. I spent most of the week counting “Just Dance 2021” as my exercise, and I refuse to listen to any scoffing because some of those dances are pure death on the body and lungs! I did, however, also go for a few walks to try to burn a few more calories. Those walks sucked because walking in the cold is the worst, but it was for the best, and that’s what I keep telling myself.
That said, I’ve come to the unfortunate conclusion that I have to raise my heart-rate a bit higher than I’ve been doing, not to mention actually get some strength training in there somewhere, so I’ve gone back to P90 starting today. Now if I could just convince myself to roll out of bed a little earlier to get it over with before really starting my day, that would be a trick.
From the food side of things…ugh, I hate dieting. Not to say that I’m dieting, exactly…I’m just trying to watch what I eat and not eat too much of it. But even that, I hate. I hate limiting myself and I hate feeling like I haven’t eaten my fill. So I do well some days and do poorly other days. It’s all about mood, really. I’ve been eating a fair bit of fruit instead of processed stuff, but veggies are always a hard sell for me, so I could definitely be doing better there. The big thing though, really, is just portion control. Even if I’m eating something healthy and/or low-cal, my natural inclination is to gorge myself. That’s a habit that’s going to take a while to break.
Looking at a more specific result; I set myself a mini-goal of losing at least 2 lbs over the course of January. I ended up losing roughly 5 lbs, even after that weekend that was a giant, disgusting binge, so I’m pretty happy with that. I’ve doubled the mini-goal for the month of February as a result: I’m going to aim for a loss of at least 4 lbs this time around. If I can manage that I’ll be well on my way to my first real weight-loss goal (of which there are four, before I hit my actual desired weight).
I hardly feel like I need to say anything here, other than the fact that creativity has kinda been my life lately. I have other things to do and concentrate on, but I’ve been hyper-focused on writing and drawing, and I refuse to feel bad about that.
I’ve been having far too much fun sketching with my graphic tablet, and although I don’t know if I’m ever really going to get the hang of coloring my stuff, I’ve been adding little flashes of color here and there to make things pop. For instance, I did this piece based on an old Instagram pic of myself and colored just the eyes, hair, and lips to interesting effect:
I’m quite pleased with the result and have gotten a few more ideas for drawings as a result. I’ve also started sharing some more…interesting pieces to my Patreon-only, because why the hell not, right?
On the writing side of things there is good news and bad news. The good news is that I smashed another Pacemaker.press weekly goal. Pacemaker wanted me to write 11,695 words, and I went past that with a total of 12,320 words, all of them fictional ones. The bad news is that of those 12k+ words, absolutely none of them went toward “The Other World: Book Three”. Part of the reason is – I’m sure you’ve guessed – the fact that I’m drowning in a sea of my own fan fiction. But there is also a more whiny reason, which is the fact that I’ve been experiencing some major writer’s block concerning “Book Three”. It’s really quite frustrating. I’ve got the overall story all worked out, but it’s all the little in-between bits that are giving me trouble. In other words, all the boring bits. *cough*
That said, one of my mini-goals for February is to have a complete draft of “Book Three”, even if it has major issues that need massive revising. Sooooo, I suppose we’ll see what happens!
Why did I make this a section of my goals posts? I’m not complaining because I have nothing to report; it’s just that this is a weird one to try to quantify.
If we go from a strictly numbers standpoint, I can tell you that the social media stuff has been just as mindnumbingly frustrating as usual. The YouTube Twitter stayed the same while the Instagram lost two followers; the Author Twitter gained three followers and the Instagram gained one. Nothing worth writing home about one way or the other.
Stepping out a bit more broadly, there was nothing productive done concerning the YouTube channel last week, unless you count a little bit of basement work that Jason and I did last week. To be fair, the basement work is definitely required, and part of what I did was to rebuild our filming setup (which had been deconstructed and thrown all over the place when we had that water leak), so that’s actually a step in the right direction toward filming again.
Something else that needs doing, however, is to put some work into what kinds of videos we actually want to do from here on out. We’re bored with the plain old unboxings and toy reviews, and want to start doing something with a little more personality, but we haven’t really come to any conclusions as to how we’re going to go about that.
Meanwhile, I’ve also got thoughts about the future of the website, but I haven’t touched it since last week because I got frustrated trying to figure out how to fix some stuff that the host claims is wrong. This isn’t my thing, you guys, so give me a break, okay?
Just to give myself a bit of a boost in this category, I did do quite a bit of clearing up in the reading/writing/retro gaming room, which it was in dire need of. I can see the floor again! and the futon is actually accessible if anyone comes up for a night! Go me!
As far as the relaxation and fun bit goes, I was really all over the place this past week. The most ordinary bit was probably reading, which you all can likely take a good stab at right now. Yes, I read a bunch of fan fiction. Sue me. But I also read a few more chapters of “Godsgrave”, and have rekindled my obsession with the story, thus I am now rapidly approaching the ending. Sooooo good, you guys.
Also, quick side note: if you didn’t already know, Amazon officially launched their “First Reads” program today. If you’re a Prime member you get one free ebook every month from a list of new releases in various genres. I grabbed an interesting-sounding fantasy novel called “Wings of Fury”. So, if you’re a Prime member, don’t forget to go grab yourself a free book!
Okay, so back to me specifically…
I did a fair bit of “watching” last week, which I didn’t really realize until I sat down and thought about it, because most of it was done while dealing with other stuff. I watched several episodes of “Supernatural” while taking care of massive piles of laundry, Jason and I have been watching “Community” again at suppertime, and I’ve been catching up with some YouTube channels I enjoy while doing other chores around the house, like cooking. We also, as a family, rewatched “Godzilla”, “Kong: Skull Island”, and “King of the Monsters” in anticipation of the upcoming, “Godzilla VS Kong”. Because you know DAMN WELL that we’ll be watching that the very second we can get our grubby little hands on it.
Finally, we have video games, which went a bit by the wayside over the past week. I haven’t gotten back to “Jedi: Fallen Order”, which I’ll need to correct soon if I want to beat it before I forget how to play. I did play “Just Dance 2021” a few days in a row, but I treat that as more of an exercise than a game. Finally, I hooked up the Atari and tested out the box of games Jason gave me for Christmas, though I didn’t spend a whole lot of time on each individual game because I was more focused on just making sure they were all functional. FYI, they all were, and there’s some reaaaaaaaaaally quite awful gems in there. “The Empire Strikes Back” makes me want to laugh and cry all at once, it’s so wonderfully crap.
And with that, we finish up the month of January 2021! I don’t want to feel like I’m waving my life away, but I must admit that I’m pleased to be on this end of it since, as I previously mentioned, January tends to be a shit month, at least in my opinion. But all in all, it wasn’t a bad past week, nor a terrible past month. Here’s to hoping that things only move onward and upward through the year!
Feel free to let me know how your year is going so far! Do you have any big goals? Specific plans? Anything awesome on the horizon? Share what’s going on with you! ❤
