Plans and Goals 2018: Week 34 Review

Okay! *claps hands together* I’m awake, I’m moderately alert, and I’m not currently in a terrible mood, so I think it’s a good time to throw one of these posts together!

I have nothing particularly specific to the week to say this time around before actually getting into the post. Aside from a couple of days of wicked nightmares last week it actually wasn’t a terrible week and nothing really stood out as something that I want to mention. So let’s just get right into it, I guess!

Plan #1: Focus more on Writing.
You guys aren’t going to believe this, but I actually have good news on this front for week 34!

  • Goal #1: Write half a million words throughout the year. IT WAS MY BEST WEEK OF THE YEAR SO FAR! That’s not to say that it was an absolutely stand-out fabulous week, the likes of which the world has never seen, but it was a good week for writing. Most of my words went toward posts for, but they were (at least, I felt) good words that came together to create good posts. Together with a few blogging words for this site I wound up with 6449 words toward blog posts. I also wrote 352 words toward a fanfic I’ve been scribbling in my spare time for relaxation purposes. That’s a week’s total of 6801 words which, as I’ve already mentioned, is my best weekly total for the year so far! In fact, it’s one of only four weeks during which I hit the 6k mark. Go me! Week 34’s numbers bring me up to a year’s total so far of 142,062, and brings my daily average up a bit more to 597 words per day. Gotta love seeing that number move upward!
  • Goal #2: Sell more books. On the more sulky side of things, do you guys know what is extremely depressing? I sold exactly one – yes, ONE – e-book last week….and I was actually excited when I saw that sale show up. That’s how bad sales have been over the past few months. One purchase shows up and it feels like a heavenly choir is singing Hallelujah around me. That’s super-pathetic, right?
On an absolutely related note, someone give me some new (free) ideas for promoting my books! Pllllllease! I’ll give you a cookie!
  • Goal #3: Complete and publish The Other World: Book Two. I have to own up that I didn’t get much work done toward this goal in week 34, mostly because those posts I mentioned earlier actually took a good long while to write. I did work out some more on that annoying scene I mentioned last week, however, so that’s definitely something.

Plan #2: Focus more on YouTube.
You guys, it is so hard to get back into YouTube after taking so much time off. We didn’t intend to take that time off (*shakes fist to the heat wave*) but once we were finally set to start up again it’s been really difficult to get back into the swing of things. That said…

  • Goal #1: Film more often.  We did manage to film two videos last week, and they were fun ones. Entertainment Earth sent us a full case of “The 13” series Dunny blind boxes to show off, and Jason came up with a really fun opening for the vid that put us in a wicked-fun mood for the rest of the filming. The figures themselves were also bloody amazing and tons of fun, so that really helped as well. Additionally we did a little haul of stuff we picked up at a local comic shop (local, in this respect, meaning a three-hour drive away…ugh), which is the kind of vid we haven’t done in ages so it was fun.
We’d hoped to get more done, but a few days of travel along with the aforementioned “hard time getting back into it” meant it never happened, but we do have plans for week 35, so stay tuned. 🙂
  • Goal #2: Put more focus into, and have more fun with, the social media aspect. I think I’ve mostly gotten back into my stride with the social media. I’ve been tweeting more often and Instagramming more often for sure. Facebook is still an anomaly on my personal radar, and I’ve definitely been much less active on the author accounts. but I’ve been working on it. The bigger thing right now is staying active on the YouTube accounts to keep interest alive since we didn’t post many videos over the course of the summer.

#3: Focus more on myself.
I’ll be honest: though I said at the beginning of this post that there was nothing remarkable about week 34 that I felt the need to mention, it was a stressful week in many ways and focusing on myself has absolutely been pushed to the back burner lately. In fact, it’s so far back that it’s toppled completely off the stove top.

  • Goal #1: Take time daily to read/watch/play.  I’ve been wanting to read Neil Gaiman’s Stardust since I made a post about it on the author accounts a couple of weeks ago, but I haven’t even gotten a page in yet. I know I’m being foolish, but lately every time I try to sit down and read I just find myself thinking of all the other things I could and SHOULD be doing, so I can’t get into it. Similarly with playing games…I’ve spent a few minutes at a time playing phone games with missy as a compromise for being too busy to play much with her, but sitting down to play a real video game? I can’t bring myself to “waste” the time. I did manage to get a movie in last night (Hereditary….review to come!) but only because there are certain hours of the night that are set aside for me and Jason to do things together, and that’s what we decided to spend them on last night. I don’t mean to make that sound bad – I obviously love spending time with my husband! – I just mean to impress that it wasn’t “ME time”. At this point I honestly can’t remember the last time I took some genuine “ME time”.
  • Goal #2: Stay active, but don’t obsess. Did I go for a run last week? I honestly can’t remember. I want to say yes, but the old age is kicking in on me.
can tell you that I’ve done a little bit of strength training recently, courtesy of a newly-purchased knock-off thigh master (no, seriously) as well as a strange device called “Wonder Arms” that I picked up at the Dollarama of all places. Neither piece of equipment is a quality device or anything, but for the prices I paid for them they’re worth the bit of muscle toning I’ve been doing (almost) every day. Yay for doing something!

So looking back I see that it was an excellent week for writing, a not-at-all-terrible week for YouTube stuff, and a crappy-but-not-the-absolute-worst week for ME stuff. I can live with that. For now. At some point I’m definitely going to have to figure out how to work focusing on myself back into the equation, but for the time being I’m just happy to be able to report a few results here and there.

How was your week? Were you able to accomplish anything? Do anything fun? Make any progress toward your own goals? Feel free to share!

Plans and Goals 2018: Week 5 Review

Last week I spoke of burnout, and the beginning of week 5 was very similar, what with our YouTube channel anniversary closing in on us, but I can honestly say that the last couple of days have been a melting ooze of laziness and recuperation. Not a great amount was accomplished as a result, but I’m perfectly okay with that, because the rest was desperately required. ^_^

Moving through week 5 also brought us from January into February, which feels crazy to me! I know I say this all the time, but I feel like the month just disappeared beneath me. Luckily a lot was done throughout the month, but it still just feels weird to think that January is already gone!

But never mind that for now. Right now we’re talking about the 5th week of 2018, and what I did – or didn’t – accomplish during those seven days.

Plan #1: Focus more on Writing.
This was a funny week for writing, as I went hardcore in the first couple of days…and then completely gave up on anything of the sort for the remainder of the week. We were so busy with our huge 2nd Anniversary Video that I just couldn’t get my brain to focus on anything else. That said, what did get accomplished in that time?

  • Goal #1: Write half a million words throughout the year. This was a bad week for meeting daily goals. I hit the 1370 word-per-day goal on the first two days of the week, and then just…stopped, as previously mentioned. By the time I realized I hadn’t written anything in several days it was the end of the work, and I groaned to myself because that surely meant I’d destroyed the slow-but-steady forward momentum I was making. However, when I checked my numbers this morning I was pleasantly surprised! I did manage to write 5047 words toward blog posts this week, plus another 728 words toward The Other World. That gave me a weekly total of 5775 words, bringing my yearly total so far up to 25,929 words, which actually means that my daily average – while still quite a ways from where it needs to end up – still went up a bit, hitting 763 words-per-day in 2018 so far. Given how many days this week I did absolutely no writing, I’m very pleasantly surprised with this, and since we’re now past our anniversary and are able to calm down a little bit with the channel work, here’s hoping to pushing that average up even further in week 6!
  • Goal #2: Sell more books. I’ll admit that I was getting a little cranky with this goal as January came to a close, because I hadn’t heard from the store which is carrying my books, and up until the last couple of days of the month I hadn’t sold a single book online. Self-promotion continues to be an incredibly difficult thing to pull off without annoying people and/or spending money I don’t have, so I was definitely getting grouchy. Luckily, right before the month’s stats rolled over for CreateSpace, my awesome friend Marie from Sweden bought a few copies of my books to give to friends as presents. 😀 This sale, of course, doesn’t really have anything to do with my personal efforts, so it’s not exactly an accomplishment as such, but I’ll take it! And then, right before I started writing this post I finally got a message from the shop owner and found that he’s sold three books as well! Six books in a month isn’t exactly big money, but since I’ve been known to go literal months without selling a single book, this is a decent month for me. 😛
  • Goal #3: Complete and publish The Other World: Book Two. I can’t honestly claim to have accomplished anything toward this goal in week 5, so I’ll just be completely blunt. I was far too busy to even properly think about The Other World. I was able to toss out a few blog posts because the topics in question required little concentration on my part, but I just didn’t have the brain power left after YouTubing that would be required to put together plot points in a logical manner. That said, I do intend to spend some significant time in the coming week working on just that. I have approximately 90% of a beta-reader draft; I just need to go back to some scenes near the beginning that I skipped in favor of moving forward and getting more done in later scenes.

Plan #2: Focus more on YouTube.
No one can possibly claim that Jason and I didn’t focus on YouTube in week 5, as we spent literally three straight days working on our 2nd anniversary video bonanza, which ended up being just shy of an hour and a half long! We definitely melted into relaxation mode the past few days, but we absolutely deserved it after all the work we got done first!

  • Goal #1: Film more often. Technically speaking, this goal waned in week 5, with only one video technically getting filmed. But as previously mentioned, that one video took three damn days of work. It was over two hours of actual filming, and also involved conversing with a number of contributors, taking photos, hunting down clips from past videos and cobbling them together to create a montage, and the editing….dear lord the editing. Jason and I took several shifts each, and it spent two days just on the editing process. So, in conclusion, I refuse to feel bad for only doing one video, since that one video took as much time as half a dozen. XP
  • Goal #2: Put more focus into, and have more fun with, the social media aspect. I’ve been having good days and bad days with this one recently. Twitter I find easy, but Instagram takes more time than you might think and as previously mentioned I just haven’t had the brainpower this past week. And SnapChat? Don’t talk to me about SnapChat. Here’s to getting back into a steadier system in week 6.

Plan #3: Focus more on myself.
You might be expecting to hear me berate myself this week, given I was talking about being busy and not having brainpower all through this post so far. But surprisingly, it wasn’t actually a bad week for looking after my own interests!

  • Goal #1: Take time daily to read/watch/play. I couldn’t seem to find the time to actually focus on anything specific in week 5, but I did manage to pick at things here and there to keep myself sane. I read a few more chapters of A Clockwork Orange (which I was supposed to finish in January, but that’s for another post), and I spent (perhaps a disturbing amount of) time snuggled up on the couch with a blank brain and the Pokemon Trading Card Game Online, which my daughter has now gotten me addicted to. Both things served to keep me from absolutely losing my mind this past week, in between bouts of working on the anniversary vid.
  • Goal #2: Stay active, but don’t obsess. This will likely always be one of the weakest goals for me, simply because so much of what I do (YouTube, writing, social media nonsense) involves sitting in front of a camera or computer for long periods of time. Believe it or not though, I still remained pretty active because I played Just Dance with the little one multiple times this week. It was only a few songs at a time, but some of those songs are frikkin’ INTENSE! More than one of missy’s favorites nearly killed me, reminding me of how out of shape I actually am. Which is…a good thing? I guess? 😛

So that was week 5. It sounds a little sparse and filled with playing around, but honestly it was quite involved, a little stressful, and ended with completely turning my brain off for a few days, which is something I desperately needed. So, all in all, it was a good one! Here’s to week 6!

Plans and Goals 2018: Week 4 Review

The burnout is real, you guys! @.@
Okay, to be honest I’m actually feeling a lot better today, but sometime around the middle of this past week the burnout hit me hard, and I’m fairly certain it hit Jason too, because the two of us were just shy of worthless for a couple of days. I guess that’s the price of getting stuff done, though, because we still had a fairly successful week overall!

Plan #1: Focus more on Writing.
My stats, such as they are, are slowly but steadily climbing. I was stymied away from my writing focus for a few days this week, but overall this was still actually my best week so far, so I take that to mean that I’m improving quite a bit.

  • Goal #1: Write half a million words throughout the year. First, I want to quickly point out that I had some numbers messed up in the previous weeks because of the way my day planner is laid out. The year started on a Monday, so I counted my first week as 6 days so that I could, from then on, base everything on a Sunday-to-Saturday progression. Unfortunately, my planner is laid out so that every 2-page spread starts on Monday and ends on Sunday. So, long story short, I kept forgetting to turn back a page and add Sunday’s totals into my week. With that said, I’ve gone back and fixed the numbers in my previous posts, and what it boils down to is that I’ve gotten a little better every week so far. Yay for that! Progressing in that manner, we have the report for this past week. I wrote 2069 words toward the blog, and 3605 words toward The Other World, for a weekly total of 5674 word. That brings me to a yearly total so far of 20154, giving me a daily average of 746. That’s still nowhere near where I’m supposed to be, but as mentioned, it’s slowly going up, so, you know…progress!
  • Goal #2: Sell more books. I’m hoping to have a more complete report on this one soon, when the local shop owner returns from his trip, but at the moment there’s not all that much to say. I haven’t had any online purchases or downloads so far this month. There have been some page reads through Kindle Unlimited, so that’s something at least, although from a financial standpoint it’s barely worth reporting. Since the Kindle Unlimited system only pays approximately 1 cent per every 2 page reads, that means that I made approximately $0.60 last week. Yay! I can buy half a Tim’s coffee. -_-
  • Goal #3: Complete and publish The Other World: Book Two. The process is ongoing, of course, but moving forward for sure. This past week I mostly ignored Book Two in order to get out some thoughts for Book Three, but because of that I’ve worked out a few issues I have with Book Two, so in this coming week I’ll be going back through and making some changes to the manuscript in preparation for sending it to my beta readers.

Plan #2: Focus more on YouTube.
Overall we slowed down a bit this week, partially because of the aforementioned burnout, but also partially because we’ve very nearly managed to plow through the videos we were hoping to get done before our anniversary coming up this week. Go us!

  • Goal #1: Film more often. During week 4 we filmed and published 7 videos, which is plenty, of you ask me! Three of those were vids I did by myself (go me!), and one was an exceptionally long Godzilla haul that took a full day for us to film, edit, and publish, so all in all I feel very accomplished.
  • Goal #2: Put more focus into, and have more fun with, the social media aspect. Social media continues to expand as well, although I’m having trouble remembering to even bother with SnapChat, and Twitter is definitely coming much easier to me than Instagram is. All in all, though, it’s been going well, and I believe our followers have been going up on those platforms as a result. I’ve also been seeing a lot of interaction from toy companies lately, as they’ve been liking and even sharing posts that we tag them in when we show off their products. It’s extremely appreciated and makes me very happy to see that there are actually people within these companies paying attention to what social influensters are doing for them, so I’ll definitely continue to share our favorite products with the world!

Plan #3: Focus more on myself. As always, this is one of my weakest points. I just never seem to find the time to actually put any effort into my own personal health, but trust me, it’s not for a lack of trying.

  • Goal #1: Take time daily to read/watch/play. It was a rough week for this one, in particular because we spent Friday and Saturday running all over hell’s creation. Friday we went out to pick up Jason’s preorder of Dragonball Fighter Z, only to discover that our store, for some reason, wasn’t sent the proper Day One copies of the game, so if we wanted what we’d actually purchased we had to go for an extra long drive to a different store that had actually gotten the right ones. Then yesterday we took a 3-hour drive into the city to look for a few specific items, none of which we actually ended up finding, unfortunately. Luckily we found a few other awesome things, so the day wasn’t an entire waste. That said, between those two days of running around, and the other days during which we were busy filming and editing, I didn’t spend a lot of time on myself. Mostly I snagged a minute here and there to play phone games, and on one day when I was exceptionally tired I snuggled up with the little miss and watched A New Hope. That one makes up for the rest of the week, though, because she enjoyed it, and it makes me grin like a fool when my daughter talks about Star Wars. XD
  • Goal #2: Stay active, but don’t obsess. I was actually fairly active this week, though, partially because of the two days of running around, shopping, but also because I spent a couple of evenings playing Just Dance with the kid. That game is a hell of a cardio exercise, let me tell you! That said, I also recently discovered that I’ve gained 10 lbs over the past two months, so it looks like I’m not being nearly active enough. As I very much DO NOT want this to end up being a trend, I think it’s about time to start putting some extra effort in.

So that was week 4 of 2018. There were some ups and downs, but overall the progress seems to be in a steady, forward direction, so I’m confident and determined. It’s nearly February, so let’s see if I can keep the motion going in the new month!
